If a person dies with no relatives, how do they find your will? I mean, can you file it publicly?

Or do they have to look through your house to find it?If a person dies with no relatives, how do they find your will? I mean, can you file it publicly?
You can file a will in the county recorder's office. You'd still need something that would tell people where to look. I worked in a legal office on a military base and we did not maintain the originals of the wills...we sent people home with their originals and a checklist of things to gather up. What's generally recommended is get a fireproof box for your important documents. Give a copy of the will and any instructions to your executor with instructions on how to get to your original. Some people choose to give the original to the executor and put the copy with instructions on how to reach the executor in their fire-proof safe. Do NOT put it in a safe deposit box because once you die your box is locked until the will is executed...If a person dies with no relatives, how do they find your will? If the person has a will it should be with a lawyer. A will with no lawyer involved is usually not valid. So if they find a written will that says give everything to my cat, it would be ignored. In this case sadly no one would look for any will. The State would take ownership and contract people to prepare the home, probable for auction. They would put anything in the garbage.
